Policy For Curbside Collection Of Garbage, Big Items, Grass And Brush

The following policy is in addition to section 10.06 Collection of Garbage and Refuse, Chapter Ten, Health and Sanitation of the City of Kewaunee Municipal Code. The following policy was approved at the August, 1996 meeting of the Public Works Committee.

Garbage Collection

  • Every clear plastic bag - up to 33 gallons shall have a sticker placed upon it. (effective July 7, 2008)

Big Item Collection

  • Two garbage stickers per stop.
  • All waste building materials set out for curbside collection shall be placed in containers or be properly prepared so that it can be reasonably handled and loaded by one person into the collection truck and each individual item shall weigh not more than 75 pounds, with the exception of large appliances. Waste from large remodeling projects will not be picked up for collection.
  • All waste materials shall not have sharp edges, nails or contain other objects that would be hazardous to the collection person.
  • The total volume of waste building material set out for collection at a stop shall not exceed 3 cubic yards.
  • Any item that can be bent, folded or placed in a 30 gallon clear plastic garbage bag shall be placed curbside with a sticker for the regular weekly garbage collection.
  • To assist the collection person separate metal items from non-metal items for collection.
  • No concrete items will be picked up.

Grass

  • Place grass clippings in open bag for collection on Spring Clean Up Day Only.
  • Tree leaves may be raked to the street gutters only after October 15 of each year.

Brush

  • Brush pick up is the 4th WEDNESDAY of each month. That is the only time that the City Public Works staff will pick up brush. The route will start on north-south streets and will end on east-west streets. If there is more brush out than can be picked on the scheduled day work will continue until the entire City is picked.
  • Brush is to be placed butt end to the curb. Tree limbs are to be whole. Short pieces will be picked up on grass pick up days. Placement of brush curbside prior to 48 hours of the scheduled pick up is a violation of the Municipal Code of the City of Kewaunee and will result in a citation with a minimum fine and court costs of $186.00.
